Shocks to the system: Humanitarian financing and rising needs

Development Initiatives (DI) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) are pleased to invite you to an official side event on the margins of this year’s ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment. The event will consist of a presentation on the latest trends in global humanitarian assistance followed by a discussion that will bring together representatives from across the humanitarian community.

Humanitarian needs and the critical financial resources required to address them have reached a record high with more than $46 billion currently required to assist more than 200 million of the 300 million people in need.

While still dealing with the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the humanitarian system must now sustain delivery in the face of sudden and significant new crises. From Ukraine to Ethiopia, the gap between needs and resources is growing with far-reaching consequences for everything from migration to food systems.

This event will be moderated by Christina Bennett CEO at The Start Network and will feature the following presentations:

• ‘Preview of the 2022 GHA Report – humanitarian financing in the current global climate’, Angus Urquhart (Crisis & Humanitarian Lead) DI
• Summary of the 2022 Global Humanitarian Overview report, UN OCHA

Following DI and OCHA's presentations, a panel of representatives from across the humanitarian sector will come together for a moderated discussion on the current challenges and opportunities for greater and more effective impact. Donors and humanitarian agencies will share their experiences and perspectives on defining priorities and mobilising sufficient and impactful levels of resources given the current national and international constraints.
