Assessment of Kenya's preparedness to disasters caused by natural hazards: floods, drought and disease outbreak: dissemination event

The study aimed to assess preparedness under different frameworks: governance and legal; capacity to prepare; links to international processes of disaster preparedness; and financial allocations to preparedness.

It found that there are no existing legal frameworks in place guiding the country’s disaster preparedness. There appears to be lack of political will to prioritise this. With the lack of guiding principles, coordination of preparedness across the different disasters is not strong. Disaster preparedness is much more reactive than proactive. There are multiple coordination platforms across the various actors that are perceived as useful but rely on good relationships to work.

Format and speakers

The event will start with a presentation of the findings by the research team. Thereafter a panel discussion from a range of experts in government and non-state actors will be moderated under Chatham House Rule.
