Humanitarian financing in the current global environment: Opportunities, challenges and lessons from the Covid-19 response

Development Initiatives (DI) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will convene a virtual side event on Tuesday 22 June 2021 in the margins of the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment to discuss the latest developments in humanitarian financing in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This participatory session will be the first opportunity to examine the findings of DI’s Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) Report 2021 and take stock of the latest 2021 Global Humanitarian Overview. A panel of experts will reflect on this new evidence and share their experiences of humanitarian work in the age of Covid-19. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a ‘question and answer’ session.

Discussions will focus on trends in humanitarian funding and needs, opportunities for collective action and advocacy in the humanitarian landscape, and approaches to increasing the quality of funding – including flexibility and localisation. We will explore opportunities and challenges in meeting the urgent humanitarian needs and how sufficient levels of resources can be mobilised within the constraints of the pandemic and recovery.
