Partnering to deliver data for invisible groups to ensure that no one is left behind: Practical lessons to build inclusive data systems that give voice to communities

Development Initiatives and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) are hosting a session at the World Data Forum under thematic area 3 – Leaving No One Behind.

About the session

We need to generate and leverage data and statistics to ensure everyone has a voice and is visible. For this session we will look at the critical role of timely, accessible, high-quality, disaggregated data in providing evidence for policymaking that ensures inclusive progress as the world seeks to recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are most relevant to the Leave No One Behind pledge is being reversed, including SDG 1 on ending poverty and SDG 10 on reducing inequality. An estimated 50 million more people were living in poverty in 2020, while Covid-19 has exposed and exacerbated multiple inequalities. As with other crises, the people who have the least resilience are likely to be hit hardest, whether directly by the health pandemic, from resulting lockdown measures or from the longer term socio-economic consequences.

Inclusive data systems have never been more important. It is those individuals and communities who are furthest behind that are most likely to remain invisible, and not be included in official surveys or counted by national statistical systems.

In this event we will:

• Explore what needs to be done to ensure resilient data systems that can respond to rapid changes in demand.
• Share lessons from new partnerships developed between official and non-official data producers in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Consider how data practices have changed, and the benefits and challenges of blended approaches.

Attendees will gain practical learnings on the benefits and challenges of developing inclusive partnerships to leave no one behind, drawing on the experience of panelists and contributions from participants. A recording of the event will be shared with attendees afterwards.

The event will be a panel discussion followed by a Q&A.

It will be a largely virtual session, enabling participants from all countries to join and participate online. The session will be in English.
