The data systems team

Our team helps Development Initiatives (DI) achieve its aims by making sure that users stay at the heart of all of our work with data. We find and extract data that is difficult to access, then make sure that it is available online in ways that are easy to digest. We are skilled at joining up datasets and making them interoperable to bring insights that would otherwise be impossible to produce. We also support DI’s data analysis by automating key processes, and provide important quality checks that reduce the risk of human error in the collection and manipulation of data. We build interactive data visualisations that help make our analysis easier to access and understand.

We are skilled in full-stack digital development and driving design of products by user needs.

We use code to analyse data, and our team is comprised of data scientists and developers who work together. We mainly work in R, Python, SQL and React. We are experts in merging datasets, charting, geospatial data and gathering data from PDFs and other unusual sources.

Data landscaping is another of our team’s specialisms: we identify, contextualise and document national data systems and critically engage with them to understand how they can better contribute towards achieving development objectives.

Our team is global, with members in Bristol, Washington DC and Kampala, and we’re used to working collaboratively across different time zones. We deliver a range of bespoke technical projects using agile principles with an iterative process. We love taking the time to work out what we can do better and differently at the end of every project so that we are constantly learning.
