DI receives Kenya Open Data award for innovation

Development Initiatives has won an award for innovation for its Development Data Hub. The award was given by Kenya Open Data, a project of the ICT Authority – a state corporation under the Ministry of ICT in Kenya.

The awards are given to those who have helped make data more open and accessible, and are open to government, private sector, NGOs, civil society organisations and others.

DI’s data hub is an open platform that makes data on poverty and resources accessible online. It allows people online to see Kenya’s country profile which includes the numbers on poverty, international financial flows in and out of the country, and what domestic resources are available. The data is also global so poverty and resources in Kenya can be compared against other countries across the world.

Momodou Touray, Director of Poverty Research at Development Initiatives, said “I’m delighted that we have won this award. Since 2011 we have been working in Kenya to advocate for better, more accessible development data, and to make that data available and usable to anyone. Our data hub is one of our proudest pieces of work to date, and it is great to have this innovative tool recognised by Kenya Open Data”
