The impact of Covid-19 on aid: Financing an equitable recovery

Development Initiatives (DI), the United Nations Foundation and Oxfam International are pleased to host a panel event on the financing challenges presented and exacerbated by Covid-19, and the action required to ensure an equitable response and recovery. This event will be an official side-event of the 2021 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, we knew that mobilising the funding needed to deliver our shared global development ambitions was a huge challenge. The pandemic has compounded this situation: needs are rising and all resources are taking a hit – international, domestic, public and private. This will impact poorer countries more acutely if action is not taken to ensure they do not fall further behind as countries with better access to resources begin to recover.

So it is vital we are equipped with a clear picture of the financing landscape and how it is shifting in the midst of the pandemic, to ensure those who can drive action and effect change understand where efforts must be focused.

Bringing together a diverse group of key experts on financing, this event will set out what has changed as a result of Covid-19 and what this means for Official Development Assistance (ODA) spending if we are serious about building back better and fairer by promoting and ensuring an equitable response and recovery for all. This will include exploring new research on how key donors of ODA have responded during the first year of the pandemic, using the latest data available via the International Aid Transparency Initiative. Based on the information available in real time, this will set out what ODA commitments are being made, how priorities are shifting, and what the impact is likely to be on the poorest and most vulnerable populations unless action is taken.

Following this presentation, there will be an action-oriented discussion with a select group of panellists who will share their unique insights and perspectives and respond to key questions, such as how we make the best use of the limited resources we currently have, ODA in particular, to support building back better and fairer in 2021 and beyond.
