Internal armed conflict in Iraq has escalated since January 2014, displacing over 2 million people. In addition, Iraq is host to approximately 0.2 million Syrian refugees who are seeking refuge from the conflict in Syria, mainly in the Kurdistan region. In total, approximately 5.2 million people in Iraq are thought to be in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The main priorities for the response are the protection of civilians, many of whom are being directly targeted with violence and human rights abuses; emergency shelter for displaced families; and food security for an estimated 2.8 million people.
The UN-coordinated appeal for Iraq requests US$2.2 billion to respond to the humanitarian needs of around 5 million people in 2014 and 2015.
