Vanuatu’s government has declared a nationwide state emergency in the aftermath of Cyclone Pam, which hit the pacific island and neighbouring islands on 13 March 2015. The UN has confirmed that 24 people have lost their lives and 3,300 have been displaced. The death toll is expected to rise sharply when communications with outlying islands return. Vanuatu’s Red Cross say that more than half of Vanuatu’s population is likely to have been affected by Cyclone Pam.
Press releases from donor governments show the international community has started to respond to the crisis by providing funding pledges and in-kind support; however, very little funding has been reported to international reporting mechanisms. Yesterday, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched an appeal for US$3.9 million to support the Vanuatu Red Cross to deliver assistance.
